There Aren't Very Many People Left to Ask

The gaping mouth that waits          ...POKE

And the little Indian bead
Drops down my throat.                   ...CHOKE

I sit in my high chair                       ...OAK

You sprawled out there
We grab for the cringing
Between Then and Now.                 ...SMOKE

The trees were singing                   ...FOLK

Five men were raping
My teenage self.                             ...SOAK

Adhesive at the desk                      ...YOKE

Tucked away in dark corners
Lever pressing for promises
Of straightforward tomorrows.    ...STROKE

Afraid of choices                            ...AWOKE

In case wishes don't come true
Whistling, sitting in god's lap.        ...BROKE

Blind silence stuffed up in here      ...CROAK

Dizzy sickness and time
The business movement
Spreading lines across the air.       ...COKE

Coniferous vociferous fern             ...CLOAK

Dancing wild fandangos
Will she ever learn?                        ...JOKE
