Death
of a Songbird
Songbird's trying to fly,
To reach new heights, must one die?
Feeling too light to stop in his flight,
Announcing his pride,
With a heartfelt cry,
Is he too beautiful to lie?
A dark patch above in the sky,
Watching with sharp eyes and no cries,
With a quick whoop of envious glee,
Too far and too fast
To see the songbird's beauty,
Outstretched talons of sharpness.
In one fatal swoop,
Songbird's throat caught in a loop.
The sweet song and innocence
Stopped in an instant
Fades back into shadow.
Beautiful songbird, I saw it,
Death was too easy.
And though now the sky is clear,
The world is full of dark fear
That someday there will appear
A shadow too near.
They knew you not
Only heard your voice
And then made their choice.
Too blind in their shadows,
They could not see
That your song was not a lie.
